According to Beth Miller, Ph.D. in her book, The Woman's Book of Resilience 12 Qualities To Cultivate, women can thrive through good times and bad by learning and practicing the following qualities: vulnerability, meaning, interdependence, connection, parts, needs, gifts and talents, limits and boundaries, forgiveness, humor, persistence, and suffering. Miller writes, "Becoming resilient is not an easy process, and it has no definitive ending. It takes hard work, perseverence,
willingness, and desire.....you do possess the strength of a reed, the composure to ride out even the mightiest of storms, the willingness and ability to give way so that the waves may roll over your head."

HERE'S THE DEAL...
"You have to choose the voice you are going to trust. You can't listen to everyone." - Alice Hoffman, American writer.
Trust yourself. Listen to your intuition. Build up your resiliency reserves.
"Resiliency Brings Her Home To A New Normalcy" by Coach Deborah
Have you ever been shaken down to the depths of your soul and every inch of your being? Here's such a story.
There's a woman who brought herself back from the depths of despair. She experienced the worst kind of grief - the loss of a child. It was a nightmare when she accidentally ran over her young son with her vehicle and he died. Confusion and shock. Disbelief and heartbreak. She was vulnerable and fragile, ready to shatter into tiny pieces.
Consumed with pain, seated at her husband's side, sobbing at her son's grave, her world spins uncontrollably then turns in to a slow-motion blur. She feels detached and weak. Seconds drag on. Time stands still. Then, with mixed emotions, she looks upward and watches all the balloons fly high in to the blue, sunlit sky in memory of her son. Her boy loved balloons. At the same moment, the train whistles blow their way through town. Her boy loved trains.
A local newspaper printed a story that some say tried to paint a slanted picture of the incident when it was, indeed, an accident. People talked as people do. People wrote letters to the editor filling the editorial pages extending the pain for she and her family. Even in the midst of this turmoil and stress, she surprised herself. She began to take care of her and her family's needs, she surrounded herself with a positive support system (including grief counseling), and walked in her integrity and began to create a "new normalcy." Of course, it wasn't painless or easy and it didn't happen overnight. Good things take time. Healing takes time. She had more than enough time.
How did this mother overcome such a devastating loss? She faced it head on using her
resiliency reserves. You see, before the accident, she had the ability "to stand alone, independent in thought and action," live authentically, and use her sense of humor. People enjoyed her company. She knew who she was, what she was about and she lived life her own way. She never gave up on anything before the accident and she wasn't going to give up now. She had another child to raise, a husband to love, and elderly parents to help care for. Some days she took a step backward; some days she took two steps forward. She created a new dance and bounced back one step at a time, one day at a time.
Today she lives in a lovely, rural home with her husband and teenage daughter. Chickens run through the yard, and the cats scatter and the dog barks when visitors arrive. You can see the sheep in their pens. Tessa's a master gardener. Flowers and vegetables consume the rich soil. Everyday, she thinks of her boy and remembers how he dragged his blankie everywhere he went. The neatly folded blanket now provides precious comfort. The dark, heavy days have been replaced with re-discovered laughter. She gives herself permission to enjoy life, to live life, to feel alive. Her faith sees her through. She's been blessed with resilience. One step at a time, she walks on with a new, awakened sense of hope, a new normalcy.
