"Clear the Clutter - Make Room for Your Life" by Coach Deborah
Spring is just around the corner, and I'm hearing murmurs of purging closets and drawers and preparing for garage sales. I'm right there with all of you - literally. I've been clearing out my house for a spring garage sale; several friends are clean sweeping their homes as well to join in on Coach Deborah's big, blowout, garage sale blitz! We can all use a clean sweep from time to time. For the next several months, I'll be addressing how to simplify each of your four life areas. You guessed it. This month, it's all about decluttering your physical environments (home and work). As Cindy Glovinsky writes in her book, Making Peace With Things In Your Life, "Because we live in a universe in which everything is connected to everything else, you cannot change one aspect of your life without changing all the others. And because Things are physical and thus easier to get your hands on than relationships, careers, or spirituality, they make a great place to start truly changing your life."
"Home" is meant to be a grounded, peaceful, warm, inspirational oasis that uniquely reflects who you are and how you want to be with yourself and your family or companions. You will experience dramatic changes in energy and your everyday living habits when you have your house in order. Think about it. When we declutter our physical environments, we see the results of our work fairly quickly which is a big motivator. We feel lighter - we have more breathing space. The weights of clutter that have been dragging us down are lifted. You empower yourself and experience an overall increase in happiness and self-confidence. This leads many people to move forward and conquer even bigger challenges.
October, 2006 is when I started my clean sweep. My home has always been my sanctuary, and it needed some major decluttering as my family and I have lived in our 1800 finished square foot home for 10 years now. My house was filled to the brim - always tidy, and filled to the brim. Because I began to feel smothered by too much stuff, I swept out my house beginning with drawers, then closets, and next storage areas. Even several pieces of furniture in mint condition and beautiful decorative collectibles are being boxed up for the spring garage sale. Emptying out my house inspired me, so I continued my decluttering in January of this year by hiring Professional Room Re-arranger, Kathy Anderson of simply- Aha, to simplify my dining room and living room to create more space and a better flow for my family to live in and my guests to comfortably visit in. Both rooms were emptied (like HGTV) and Kathy produced her magic. I invited Kathy to share her wisdom, humor, and expertise on decluttering and making changes to "home" in this month's newsletter. She's included before and after pictures of my home. She's a joyful presence; enjoy her inspiring words.

Letter from Professional Room Re-arranger, Kathy Anderson of simply- Aha...
It was New Years Eve 1990... I made a resolution to be organized by the year 2000. Looking back it was all about a desire to simplify my life, a reoccurring theme now seen on every magazine cover and overheard in many conversations. I have made good progress toward my resolution over the past 17 years, but I have also realized that it is about progress, not perfection. It is clear to me that simplifying and organizing is a lot like exercising. The commitment is really a life long one... BUT once we get over the initial obstacle of "getting in shape" it gets a whole lot easier! My approach to the challenge seems to have been two-fold...say yes only to commitments that are near and dear to my heart and go through the house and gather bags and boxes full of items for garage sales and Goodwill. I have gone through the house over and over again, each time taking the clearing to a new level. Have I "arrived"? No way. But I keep telling myself...PROGRESS, not perfection!
So, from one who certainly has had a lot of real life experience in trying to "get on top life" by getting rid of the excess in her life and her home, here are a few of the ahas that have unfolded along the way...
- Have faith that whatever you need will present itself when it is needed.
- Believe that a void is ripe with possibilities.
- Your actions feeling kinda scary!?! Hurray!!! That is good sign! A friend and I have agreed that to REALLY make a change we need to take it to the level where it feels kinda scary.
- Remember whenever you say yes to one thing, you are saying no to something else.
- Think of stores as museums! Often what catches our eye is the uniqueness of an item. Once you bring it home and live with it for a few days it is no longer unique and the allure is gone. So next time something catches your eye, consider pausing to savor the object's uniqueness and beauty and then move on down the aisle!
Simplifying our lives and our homes go hand in hand.
We can do it. I know we can!
Take a big deep breathe...
stop for a moment to visualize the order, the calm...
and then...dig in!

Here's the deal...
When tackling your home clutter, start with a small project that can be finished in a day and work your way up to the bigger projects that seem overwhelming. This will help you eliminate the "p" word, procrastination. Here are some examples. If you want to get organized, clear out the old magazines from the rack. Tidy up scraps of paper on your fridge or bulletin board, clean out your purse, or clean out your junk drawer. When setting "clear the clutter" goals, be specific; don't make them too broad. Don't say, "I will get organized this year." Do say, "I will organize my bedroom closet," or "I will ask a buddy to help me organize my paperwork."
The following are a few helpful hints to declutter and simplify your home so you can live more deliberately and happily.
- Starting this month, I'll be offering "Clear the Clutter" workshops once a month, every third Monday of each month. The first workshop will be March 19th, 7-8 p.m. at the Hideaway in Northfield. Information and resources will be provided. We'll also share ideas and tell one another our intentions and support one another as we follow through on our decluttering and organizing goals. As a Professional Coach and Facilitator, it's always my goal and intention to create a fun environment where we get results. GATHER YOUR FRIENDS TO JOIN US MARCH 19TH. CONTACT ME via my contact form on this site or call 645-0055, 507-649-1965 or Email me directly. Cost is $10.00 per month payable when you attend the workshop. Workshops will run with 6 or more people. CONTACT ME soon to register for March 19th.
- To cut the clutter in your home, keep a cardboard box in your closet to store items you are ready to donate to charity. Regularly toss in clothes that don't fit or you don't want anymore. Throw out anything broken or stained. Drive them to your closest donation center when the box gets full and return the empty box to the closet.
- Take 15 minutes each week to quickly walk through your house and grab any items that are not useful, beautiful or loved. They are just taking up your time, space, or money. Donate them to charity.
- Partner up with a buddy and tell them of your decluttering intentions. A buddy can inspire and motivate you to keep going. Make appointments with yourself to complete the steps necessary to get organized. Pick a time each week and write it on your calendar.
- Hire professionals to help you clear the clutter to make room for your life.
- Look in the January 2007 issue of "O Magazine." There are many helpful hints for clearing and organizing your physical environment. Here's one example regarding clothing. "When something new comes in, at least one thing, preferably two, must go. And be realistic. If you're a size 10, hold on to the 8's but not the 6's."
- Deal with incoming paper once. "File don't pile."
- Find a "home" for everything in your house.

Did you know...
You can eliminate incoming paper (junk mail) by registering at www.the-dma.org/consumers/offmailinglist.html.
Did you know that those closets, drawers, and cupboards that are so full that they won't quite close can be hazardous to your health? In Oprah's January 2007 "O Magazine," there are many helpful tips on organizing everything to help clean up your life. According to Steven Maier, Ph.D., and neuroscience professor at the University of Colorado, "every time you look around and feel anxious or that the mess is getting out of control, your body releases cortisol, one of the classic stress hormones." Yes, that's right. Messes create stresses! By clearing away the clutter, we can clear our heads and get a grip.
Give yourself a Me-Time moment...
REWARD YOURSELF after each decluttering or organizing project you accomplish. This will motivate you to keep going.
Something to think about...
It's all about getting started and accomplishing that first, small manageable project that you can accomplish in one day. Then move on to committing to one or two small projects a day until they're done. Work up to medium tasks such as creating a filing system, and dealing with piles or boxes of clutter. When you clear the clutter, you'll be amazed at how much you clear your mind and soul. How great is that?!
Mark Twain even had thoughts on how to get started. Here's his wisdom.
"The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex, overwhelming tasks into small, manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one."
I challenge all of you to "get started" with your first decluttering project this month. Your life will become a little more effortless once you are done with your clean sweep. Spring is just around the corner... Start small and go for it!
